How to Fully Decarb Hemp Flower in Order to Activate Delta-8 THC

If you’ve ever used delta-8 THC flower before, then you know that those buds aren’t going to do much until they’re heated.  Popping a raw bud into your mouth won’t get you high no matter how much of it you take, because the psychoactive properties of delta-8 are only activated once the buds have reached a certain temperature.  In fancier terms, this is known as decarboxylation, and it’s a process that is required if you want to get the full experience that the cannabinoid has to offer.

    What is Decarboxylation?

Decarboxylation simply refers to heating the raw plant material, or individual purified cannabinoids, to activate their full extent of properties.  In the case of delta-8 THC, you’re only going to get high from it after it has been decarbed.  In its raw state, delta-8 is an acid, and this changes the way it affects the body.  Decarboxylating it changes its chemical structure so that it can take on new properties – properties that interact with the body to produce the effects that we’ve come to associate with the cannabinoid.

If you’ve ever purchased a delta-8 edible, tincture, or vape product from a manufacturer, then you’ve consumed a product that has already been decarboxylated by the company prior to including it in their formula.  This is why we don’t need to heat a vape, tincture or gummy before we consume it in order to get high off of it.  Because flower is raw, however, we need to do the decarboxylation process ourselves.

Most cannabinoids activate somewhere between 230-270 degrees Fahrenheit.  At the same time, most of them have a boiling point around 315-350 degrees, meaning that once they exceed that temperature range, they actually break down and lose their ability to provide any meaningful effects at all.

Decarboxylating Flower Through Smoking or Vaping

The easiest and most common way to decarboxylate delta-8 THC is to vape or smoke it.  The act of lighting flower with a lighter, or even using our vape pen to heat the flower via conduction or convection, brings the cannabinoid to the right temperature so that the cannabinoids in the flower become activated.  The heat of your lighter or the output of your flower vaporizer reaches the necessary decarboxylation temperature, but at the same time, we make a point to avoid burning the flower by setting our vape pen temp too high or holding the lighter on the flower for too long.

Decarboxylating Flower for Cooking or Baking

The other method for decarboxylating flower is to use an oven.  This is what you would do if you were going to make homemade edibles, or if you were going to create an infused oil that could be used to make topicals, tinctures and other types of homemade hemp products.

In order to decarb flower in the oven, there’s a very precise procedure that you need to follow, to make sure you reach the right temperature to activate the cannabinoids without burning the plant material, and also to make sure that the buds are decarboxylated evenly rather than inconsistently.  To decarb like a pro, follow these steps below.

    1. First, set your oven to 220-240 degrees, and line your trusty baking sheet with a layer of parchment paper.
    2. Now, grab your grinder and give your buds a coarse grind. This way, they’ll decarb evenly.
    3. Sprinkle your freshly ground flower over the baking sheet in a thin, even layer. Again, this will allow the flower to decarb evenly.
    4. Allow the flower to bake for about 30 minutes. It’s a good idea to use the oven light to make sure it’s not turning dark brown, which would mean it’s burning.  Also, watch out for a burnt smell, as all that you should be smelling is cannabis.
    5. Take the flower out of the oven and use it however you desire. If you’re making edibles, you’ll likely want to make “cannabutter” by cooking the flower in butter at a low temperature.  You can find plenty of recipes and techniques for this online.

Fully Decarboxylate Your Delta-8 THC Flower for Maximum Positive Effects

The bottom line is that in order to enjoy delta-8 THC flower, you’re going to have to decarb it first.  The good news is that it’s easy to do, whether you’re vaping it, cooking with it or smoking it.  Just follow the correct steps to fully unlock the potential of delta-8 THC, and all of the other cannabinoids that are found in the hemp plant.
